Smart Energy Meters

Had one of these bloody things fitted a few weeks ago and it's doing my head in.
I have now worked out every time my central heating comes on it costs me about 60p. The tumble dryer on for half an hour costs 80p.
I've turned into a right scrooge and running round shutting doors and turning lights off and making sure the family are wearing jumpers!
Should I just throw it in the drawer and never look at it again!!

If they're that smart, they'll know whether or not you're for or against nuclear power.
If you're against, your lights will go out when the wind stops blowing.

LOL.... Oh don't. We are doing Christmas and Boxing day next Christmas and I will ushering them out at 4pm haha.

It's one fitted by Southern Electric who I am with.
I realise it costs nothing to install and it won't make my bill higher.
It's just driving me mad knowing how much it costs for my boiler to turn on LOL..... I keep saying to the missus "It's not that cold, it's quote mild actually" when in fact I am freezing.
Poor kids must feel like they've moved to an orphanage.
But I realise it's worth. I have told the missus don't use tumble dryer unless necessary. And also, I have now set the time on the boiler as before we just had it work by thermostat temp and if it come on in night then it come on.... Regardless of us getting any benefit as we are all in bed. Now I've set it to come on at 6:30am for half an hour then we leave a 7:30am. So at least if its coming on we benefit from it.
My missus said to me "why are you bothered as it never bothered you before" but I suppose it's just the constant visual reminder of what you are spending.
I'm sticking it in the drawer.....
But, one positive, I now realise that during the summer we must literally spend bugger all as heating never on and clothes dried outside. Just electrical usage which is quite low.
Roll on the summer!!!!!

they are a con to circumnavigate the switching provider rules that the government put in place. If you have a smart meter changing suppliers is harder. That's why they are being so aggressively marketed.

we have had one meter reader in the past 2 or 3 years I reckon... we just send through quartely photo's of the meter readings to the company and they sort out the bill... job done..

True, no 'cost' (cough) to have it installed if you want one.
Surely the 12 billion cost of the run out more than covers (for a good decade or four) the projected future salaries of the highly skilled yet unfortunately minimum wages meter readers who look in the cupboard under your stairs for a bit.

Russ.... ha ha ha... you sound like my Brother in Law... my old man had his 70th last year round my sisters gaff... we had a marquee tent put in the garden with some electric heaters and lights... he spent virtually the whole night glued to his seat looking at the meter whirl around... we was gonna have a whip around by the end of the night...

Doesn't cost anything to get a smart meter installed here lowermarshhammer, and I doubt it does there.
The general cost to install a meter here in NZ is a couple of hundred $$, and that value obviously depreciates over 10 years or so.
When you calculate the cost of having to send round a meter reader every month of two for the same period of time, then it becomes cost effective for the company to supply and install the meter.
My old company (currently on gardening leave before going to another one) supply the register read (daily read) and interval read (48 x 30 min reads) data to the electricity suppliers (at a cost of course) and they use it to bill the customers. They also use if for putting together tariffs and plans for the customers. They don't just pick out a number at random and decide to charge you that figure per kWh.

Lots of complaints about these recently,including gas leaks following poor installations by ill-trained contractors. The whole project is a shambles and I've had to refuse installation on three or four occasions.
It is no longer compulsory to have one installed,so just refuse if you don't want it.

Total cost of smart meter roll out is in excess of 12 BILLION.
I don't doubt for one moment that the suppliers have zero intention of footing this and in the end it will be the consumers who get royally SHAFTED for this unnecessary white elephant whether they choose to have a fucking smart meter or not.

It's electricity TM, and it's a meter which tracks your usage and gives you a better understanding of it.
Assuming the guidelines in the UK are similar to here, the usage data goes from the meter, to the company that collects it, and then to the supplier.
That's it.

Not really! It causes stress and paranoia. I don't want to see what i've spent everytime I use an appliance or turn the heating on!
It would drive me potty. You are going to spend it any way so why do i need to see what i'm spending when.
We all know the real reason for them is so 'Big Brother' can watch you!!!
